Happy Valentine’s Day! Valentine’s Day is always special for romance authors. This year I’ve had interviews with the media, a radio spot with my favourite presenter, Roy Noble on BBC Radio Wales, with the mission to give a “master class” in romance writing. But, next to the dh saying “I love you” this morning, the most special part of the celebrations this year was the announcement that FLIRTING WITH ITALIAN has been shortlisted for the RoNA “Rose” Award, the short romance category of the Romantic Novel of the Year award. This means that next month I’ll be in London having lunch with my editor, lining up for photographs with the other finalists and then attending the Awards Reception with some of the nicest people I know. This, along with just about the most exciting moment of my life — well, obviously excluding meeting the “best beloved”, having his babies, the babies getting married and having babies, and holding my first book in my hands! Earlier this year, I was sweating over the talks I was going to give at the Romantic Novelists’ Association conference — nothing concentrates the mind like the prospect of talking to your peers — and the prospect of being an author mentor for Mills and Boon’s New Voices competition. The talk went well, as did library talks in support of New Voices competition and that was when I rashly decided that it was time I finished the “little book” project that a publisher had suggested to me quite a long time ago. My Little Book of Writing Romance is a primer, the basics for new writers who are just starting out, or who have run up against a brick wall when it comes to getting the story in their head onto paper. It tackles getting started, conflict, emotion and creating characters that your readers will care about. It’s the book I wish I’d had when I first picked up a pen (yes, a pen) and started my first romance. |
